Staff Picks for May 2010

Janet

2008 Chateau La Croix du Duc, Bordeaux
$12.99

This is simply the best inexpensive Bordeaux I've found this year; the kind I would expect to pay closer to $20 for. It opens with a nose of cherry, tobacco, and cedar, then follows through on the palate with plum, blackberry, mineral, and a little smoke. The creamy, silky texture and its minerality really set it apart from others at this price. Perfect for roast chicken, veal, or mushroom and brie pizza.

2008 Cepas Antiguas Tempranillo, Rioja
$15.99

Modern yet elegant sums up this wine for me. It opens with a nose of earth, cinnamon, nutmeg, black cherry, and chocolate shavings, then follows through on the palate with a little blueberry, vanilla, and blackberry. Taberna del Alaberdero served this at an April wine dinner with a sirloin carpaccio, inventively garnished with peach sorbet. This would also be brilliant with duck, served in a dark berry reduction.

The Fishes and Dishes Cookbook: Seafood Recipes and Salty Stories from Alaska's Commercial Fisherwomen
$19.95

Okay, I'll admit that I wrote the section on "Pairing Wine with Seafood", but I have also been working my way through the many delicious (and easy to make) recipes, and I am impressed! I have also learned a lot about the commercial fishing industry, thanks to the many stories and tidbits of information peppered throughout the book. For more specific wine pairing suggestions from me, visit the Fishes and Dishes Facebook page. Each recipe I make comes with a pairing suggestion. Bon Appetit!

Carl

2009 Brumales Torrontes Clasico, Lujan de Cuyo
$8.99

This lovely Torrontes from Detour Imports is just the perfect wine for those warm and even not-too-warm summer days. Orange citrus notes and white peaches are predominant on the nose and palate. Incredibly well-balanced, this white wine is a pleasure to drink. Sip it by itself or seve with any number of dishes such as chicken, fish, or pasta. I had it with a lemon pasta and shrimp - it was perfect!

2007 Silex d'Orfeuilles, Vouvray
$19.99

I've always loved this Chenin Blanc from the Loire. The soil "silex" adds a very special taste to the wine: hrebal, citrus and mineral notes from the nose to palate make this an incredibly well-balanced wine. Have it with any number of chicken and fish dishes.
